We’re starting to see Orange Is The New Black come to life.
According to a recent article on from an Australian news outlet, transgender women face a huge problem: If they’re arrested, they usually must serve time in male prisons.
In many cases, these trans women are abused and even killed when they’re in an all-male prison. Tara Hudson served time in a male prison in Gloucestershire for one week last year and was “reportedly tormented.” Her lawyer also stated that she was locked in her jail cell for 23 hours each day. After 150,000 people signed a petition, she was moved to a female prison to finish her sentence.
In the United States, CeCe McDonald, known for fighting for transgender rights, was sentenced to 41 months in a male prison for stabbing someone while being physically assaulted by a transphobic person. Laverne Cox stars in a documentary Free CeCe, which details McDonald’s horrific time behind bars. This is a new challenge that the world faces as we try to break the stereotypes of trans people and treat them seriously and with respect, especially in a court of law.
