Mark Zuckerberg’s 2016 resolution is to build an artificially intelligent bot to help him streamline his life, both at home and at work. When Zuckerberg posted a Facebook status on this resolution, one grandma commented with, “I keep telling my granddaughters to date the nerd in school, he may turn out to be a Mark Zuckerberg!”
In response, Zuckerberg replied: “Even better would be to encourage them to *be* the nerd in their school so they can be the next successful inventor!”
As it stands, women in tech are vastly underrepresented, with only 25% of tech or computing field jobs being occupied by women, according to Girls Who Code. This statistic can be linked to an equally staggering one in which only 12% of women pursue a computer science degree.
While women shouldn’t wait for men’s approval to get into the world of tech, it’s definitely nice to see successful people in the industry such as Zuckerberg using their influential platforms to bring attention to how we talk about women in these industries and encourage them to join.
