This New Photo Book Illustrates the Move Towards a Gender Fluid Society

Jessica Yatrofsky, the photographer and author behind I Heart Boy, is set to release the book’s sequel I Heart Girl. In the photo book, the focus is on illustrating just how fluid and subjective gender can be.

I Heart Girl showcases intimate photography of various women, Yatrofsky told The Huffington Post. “With the I Heart Girl series, I was inspired by the inherent strength and beauty of our bodies, and to work with women to create images that can explore both femininity and masculinity is very intriguing.”

In the 80-page photo book, each body is photographed in a way that is most reflective of who the women feel they are. The book itself comes at a time when the conversation around gender fluidity and transgender issues has been heavily covered by the media.

“This series captures a moment in time, a collective shift that’s occurring both in women and men as we become a more gender fluid society,” said Yatrofsky to The Huffington Post. “And as a society, arriving at the self-realization that we don’t have to accept the gender assigned to us at birth is both radical and beautiful.”
