This Mom Created a ‘Family Photo’ to Open Up the Discussion Around Miscarriages

This year, October 9-15th was Baby Loss Awareness Week, and in memory of the child she lost when she was four months pregnant, Victoria Doyle decided to do something about it.

Doyle has suffered nine miscarriages but now has three children between the ages of two and eight. While she feels blessed to have her daughter and two sons, Doyle still grieves the loss of those unborn children.

Recently, Doyle took photos of her three kids in the autumn foliage and noticed that one of her sons was “holding hands” with someone who wasn’t there. She decided to add an apparition, paying homage to the child she lost years ago when she was four months pregnant.

Doyle posted the photo on her photography business’ Facebook page, and it appears to have struck a chord with thousands of people.

“In April 2006 I first experienced the pain of miscarriage,” she wrote. “Although it was a long nine years ago I feel that lump in my throat and ache in my heart every time I think about it. I went on to experience a further eight losses over the years and thankfully gave birth to three wonderful healthy children, but the first was always the hardest…sometimes I wonder how different life would have been.”

We hope others are as brave as Doyle and choose to speak up about such a difficult time in any person’s life. Around 10-20% of pregnancies end in miscarriages, and it’s time more women raised awareness about their experiences.
