Author’s note: This article contains light spoilers from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
In case you haven’t heard, a little movie called Star Wars: The Force Awakens opened last month, and a few people saw it. A great deal of attention has been given to the movie’s female hero. Fans and critics alike are excited by the feminist power of the Force awakening in Rey: the film’s protagonist has all the strength and of Luke and Han Solo combined and also happens to be a woman.
While Rey is front and center in the movie, fans have been struggling to find her in Star Wars merchandise, prompting them ask #WheresRey. The latest question came when Hasbro released Star Wars Monopoly with character figurines…but no Rey. In a letter to Hasbro from an eight-year-old girl, she reminds us that female characters deserve a place of prominence. It’s a point that manufacturers and markets don’t always seem to get. Hasbro claims they wanted to avoid spoilers, and they promise Rey will be featured more in the future. We’ve just got to hope that soon we won’t have to ask #WheresRey, or where any other great female characters are for that matter.
What do you think? Is Rey being given her due?
