On Saturday, September 19th, Amelia Bonow wrote a Facebook post about her abortion. She described how approximately a year ago, she got an abortion in a Manhattan Planned Parenthood and discussed the gratefulness she felt after the abortion and how she is still a good women despite choosing not to give birth at that time. She decided to share her story in light of the bill that passed in the House of Representatives (241-187) to suspend federal funding for Planned Parenthood, an organization that assists women with reproductive health. Bonow’s friend Lindy West took a screenshot of the Facebook post and shared her story on Twitter with the hashtag #ShoutYourAbortion.
The hashtag has been tweeted over 100,000 times since its creation. Women are feeling empowered using it and are learning to break the stigma of staying silent about an abortion.
