The Purple Purse Campaign Raises Awareness About Domestic Violence

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness month, a way to spread dialogue about domestic violence and encourage people to join efforts to end violence.

The Allstate Foundation teamed up with actress Kerry Washington for their Purple Purse campaign. Purple Purse is a public awareness and fundraising campaign aimed at creating long-term safety and security for survivors through financial empowerment. Ambassador Kerry Washington is lending her voice to the cause and worked with designer Dee Ocleppo to create the limited edition Purple Purse as a representation of the financial abuse that occurs, and keeps, women in abusive relationships.

The argument of “Why don’t they just leave?” still persists in our society when it comes to victims of domestic violence. Abusive relationships are complicated and victims are often financially dependent on their abusers – or when their children’s wellbeing also in the mix. Try this virtual experience to see how domestic abuse escalates.
