It’s time to have a proper conversation about women’s health issues…just evidently not with any women.
A recent survey of 12 top media outlets done by the Women’s Media Center revealed that of all the presidential election stories in the news related to abortion or contraception, male reporters covered 67% of it. Additionally, their study showed that “female journalists quote women more often that their male counterparts, while quotes from male sources predominate in articles written by men.” This means women not only aren’t reporting on stories related to women’s issues, but women’s opinions also aren’t being voiced in the articles written by men.
It’s shocking to see how women aren’t getting their say in the media about an issues that pertains so much to them. Having female voices and perspectives is imperative in discussions of reproductive justice, yet still major media outlets fail to recognize them.
