Seth Meyers Fact-Checks the Planned Parenthood Hearing

Late Night host Seth Meyers recently addressed the controversy surrounding the Planned Parenthood hearing that occurred this week in a short segment called “A Closer Look: Planned Parenthood.” Meyers amusingly questions the “facts” put forth by the people at the hearing regarding abortions and Planned Parenthood’s purpose. He perfectly captures the problem with people continuously questioning Cecile Richards, the president of Planned Parenthood, without ever giving her a chance to respond.

Meyers attributes the beginnings of the controversy to “heavily edited tapes secretly recorded by an anti-abortion group of Planned Parenthood officials allegedly discussing the sale of fetal tissue.” Throughout the segment, Meyers calls out candidate Carly Fiorina for refusing to admit that there is no evidence or footage to suggest the existence of a Planned Parenthood video of the removal of the brain from an aborted fetus. He pokes fun at the idea that candidate Donald Trump, who is notorious for making countless faux pas in relation to women’s issues, might actually be the voice of reason amongst Republicans when it comes to the issue of Planned Parenthood.

But the shining moment of the entire segment is when Meyers calls attention to the moment when Representative Jason Chaffetz attempted to confront Cecile Richards while using a misleading graph. Chaffetz argues that the statistics on the graph were set forth by Planned Parenthood itself. In reality, the statistics are not only inaccurate, but the graph was created by an anti-choice group, Americans United For Life.

Kudos to Seth Meyers for supporting women’s right to access to healthcare.
