Planned Parenthood will be a common theme through this week’s New York Fashion Week presentations.
As bloggers, fashion editors, models and designers begin to descend upon New York City for this season’s NYFW they’ll have a special symbol that will make their resistance known — a Planned Parenthood magnetic pin.
The pin was conceptualized by some of the members of the Council of Fashion Designers for America, who over dinner wanted to find a positive way to move the dialogue forward and encourage action.
Along with the pin, NYFW attendees will receive information on how to connect with their local representatives and support the causes that are important to them.
Since the Trump administration moved into the White House, Planned Parenthood — and all it stands for — has come under attack. The administration has spoken on the topics of defunding Planned Parenthood clinics, overturning Roe v. Wade and stripping preventative care options from any Obamacare replacement they put in place.
Absent birth control and other reproductive health options covered under Obamacare, many seek these resources at Planned Parenthood clinics.
“Planned Parenthood is extremely important to me as a woman, and as someone who is interested in quality health care for all people,” said Tracy Reese, fashion designer and member of C.F.D.A.’s board of directors, to the New York Times. “We go to Planned Parenthood for so many services: for H.I.V. testing, for cancer screening, for reproductive health care. We have to stand with them now and make sure they’re not defunded.”
NYFW begins on February 9 and runs through February 16.
