This past Friday, President Barack Obama and his administration announced a five-year funding initiative called “Prosperity Together.” This initiative devotes $100 million “to invest in programs and policies that will create pathways to opportunity for low-income women and girls of color.” The $100 million to fund this project is a collaboration of 20 public women foundations. Another $18 million has been secured to continue the study of living conditions of women and girls of color.
The news of this initiative was announced at the Advancing Equity for Women and Girls of Color forum at Wake Forest University. A report of the same name outline the plan for the initiative and was released by the White House Council on Women and Girls. The five goals of Prosperity Together are “reducing exclusionary school discipline practices such as suspension, offering emotional support to victims of abuse and trauma, incentivizing STEM education, sustaining reduced rates of teen pregnancy, and tackling economic obstacles.”
It’s great to see the government working to assist in creating a better tomorrow for women who may have a more difficult time.
