My Experience Buying My First Vibrator (and What Happened When My Mom Found Out)

Masturbation: It’s the magic word that can turn a conversation amongst gals from normal to awkward at the drop of a hat.

Guys can talk about it all day and it’s not weird for them, so why is it so taboo for us ladies? I know girls who say that they’ve always been told by their moms and grandmas to sleep with their hands out from under their sheets. But when it comes to guys, it’s totally natural and acceptable for them to start exploring their disco sticks.

It is extremely important in this day and age for a woman to be able to explore her own body. How else would she know what she likes and what she doesn’t? Females have every right to get to know themselves sexually, just as men do. Female masturbation was one subject that was never brought up in the “birds and the bees” talk with my mom, nor did I discuss it ever with any of my friends. It wasn’t until just last year that one of my friends and I spent a couple interesting hours browsing around the female sex toy section on Amazon.. There are some crazy gadgets out there that are made especially for women.

So when I decided to purchase my very own vibrator this year (called the Womanizer—it’s a life-changer and can be purchased on Amazon), I made it a huge ordeal to keep it under wraps. I was careful where I did my sex toy research since reading reviews of sex toys on the Internet definitely can feel awkward, so I did it in the privacy of my own home and kept deleting my search history. I used a certain card so that my mom wouldn’t find out (even though I am a 21-year-old woman, I shouldn’t have to be so embarrassed, but I was).

After I found the one I wanted, it took me a couple weeks to be brave enough to actually place the order. Once I did, I felt extremely powerful and independent—nothing could stop me! I had been so sneaky, using that gift card so my mom would have no clue. Alas, my efforts at hiding were to no avail, as my mom received an email of a recent purchase. I woke up to a text from her one morning that read, “What’s that purple thing you ordered from Amazon?” I immediately texted my friends asking for advice, and one of them told me to just be honest and tell her. That was the last thing I wanted to do. I knew she would freak out.

However, I decided to come clean and be honest, and surprisingly, she had no problem with it whatsoever. She said she was actually proud of me for the purchase. Then we agreed never ever to mention that discussion again.

I waited a few days and the day finally came when I found the little brown box sitting on my doorstep. I opened it up to find a sleek pink case with a zipper nestled in bubble wrap. Inside the case was the vibrator itself, a charger, and an extra rubber tip. I read about all the controls (there is a button that adjusts up to five levels of intensity) and how to properly clean the device.

Needless to say, it was some of the best money I ever spent. So all in all, every woman should own a vibrator because every woman should be able to have an orgasm a day, in my opinion. In Naomi Wolf’s book Vagina, she actually talks about how amazing orgasms are for women’s mental and physical health. That book (which I wrote about in a post last year) really taught me not to be ashamed of my sexual needs; rather, it taught me to embrace them. So here I am, vibrator and all.
