Vice President of Marketing and Partnerships at Glow, Jennifer Tye, sits on the executive bench and oversees all of Glow’s products.
We got to sit down and interview Jennifer Tye for all her insights on Eve, a new sexual health app by Glow.
What is Eve by Glow, and why is it awesome?
Eve by Glow is an app that helps you manage your sex life, your cycle, and your health. The app uses data science to deliver personalized health information, helping women better understand their bodies and make informed decisions about their health and lifestyle.
When creating Eve, we aimed to build in fun (but educational) features like articles from sexual health non-profit Bedsider — these quick and dirty sex ed nuggets help fill in the gaps that schools miss, including comprehensive information on all birth control methods. The daily “Sex Quiz,” alternates between fun (“What’s Your Sex Song?”) and informative (“How Much Do You Know About Women & Porn?”) topics. And of course, my personal favorite–the daily Cyclescope, which tells me what’s going on with my body, all through gifs!
There’s also a community in the app where users can discuss taboo topics like abortion, birth control and sex-positivity – even their own relationships and sex lives. Women want to know what’s out there so that they can make informed decisions, and getting personalized information and community support is a great way to do that.
Can you talk more about sexual stigma and inaccessibility of sexual health information—why is a platform like this necessary in the first place?
There hasn’t been a large scale study done on women’s reproductive health in over 50 years, which is crazy and needs to change. On top of that there are many taboos around talking about sex, so we wanted to create a safe space to share what’s happening with your body, while also being able to receive trusted health information and insights.
Emphasizing sex-positivity, the Eve app lets users log everything from sexual activity to symptoms and moods – all with custom, emoji-like illustrations. Because the apps were created with guidance from Glow’s esteemed medical board, users can count on all of the app’s information being accurate and up-to-date.
What is your favorite thing about the work you do and the impact it has on people?
The most fulfilling part for me is hearing all the positive user feedback and how Eve is impacting users’ lives. Our platform is genuinely helping women learn more about their bodies and about healthy relationships, both of which I think are deeply important. I also love the information we’re able to share back with users, like this study we presented to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM).
What are your hopes for your future and the future of Eve by Glow?
We were just recently selected as one of four early launch partners for Apple’s CareKit, which we integrated into our apps Glow Nurture and Glow Baby, and we’re already thinking about how we can leverage this in Eve. We’ll also soon have premium features for Eve, along with some new updates and options that we’re really excited about, so stay tuned!
Do you have any advice for young girls who are confused navigating their sexuality?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. It’s the only way to truly get an understanding about what is happening with your body. I’m proud that Eve offers a safe place for women to ask questions and give advice, not only from peers but from medical professionals. It’s a great way to get comfortable and talk about the things that we’re taught not to feel comfortable discussing.
Can you describe one of your proudest moments since starting this project?
Women’s health is understudied, and sexual health for women even more so–not to mention the significant gaps in sex ed in this country. It was really rewarding to see the young women on our team weigh in and shape Eve with such passion and enthusiasm, and then to see the incredibly positive and enthusiastic response to the app from our Eve users. It’s just so clear that women have been searching for these resources–and when they find the app, they fall in love. I take a lot of pride in knowing that we’re really making an impact and providing valuable information and support to women.
