Here’s Why Chrissy Teigen’s Use of IVF Is Coming Under Fire

Model, author, and TV host Chrissy Teigen has always been open about her and husband John Legend’s experience with in vitro fertilization, but recently Teigen has also gone into depth about her decision to pick the gender of her child as part of the IVF process.

In an interview with People, Teigen reveals that she and Legend were given the opportunity to pick the gender of their child, and they chose to have a girl. Of their decision Teigen said, “I think I was most excited and allured by the fact that John would be the best father to a little girl…I think he deserves a little girl. I think he deserves that bond.”

Teigen has received a lot of criticism for her decision to participate in what some people are calling the “designer baby” trend, or the process of picking the genetic makeup of a baby in order to make sure a particular gene is or is not present. Teigen took to Twitter to respond to the comments, saying “I am not mad at anyone’s beliefs, but I don’t really actively seek out people to make them feel bad about their decisions either.”

The couple chose to do IVF after experiencing difficulty getting pregnant. In September, Teigen commented on her fertility issues on her talk show FABlife. “I would say, honestly, [that] John and I were having trouble,” Teigen said. “We would have had kids five, six years ago if it had happened, but my gosh, it’s been a process.” Teigen announced her pregnancy in October and the couple’s first child is due this spring.
