While many of us bemoan the onset of the holiday season (marking the beginning of overplayed holiday music and eggnog-flavored everything), it’s also the time that many people choose to give back to others, including donating time and supplies to shelters. And while many kind people take time to gather clothes, food, and toys to give, there’s one vital thing many people forget: Feminine hygiene products.
Tampons, pads, and menstrual cups are in short supply at houseless and domestic violence shelters across the country. This is an inconvenience that only adds on to the already difficult daily struggles of many women living in poverty. Being unable to control one’s own body lessens a woman’s sense of independence and her ability to perform necessary functions or at jobs. So this holiday season, don’t forget to add a pack of feminine hygiene products into your donation basket. To find a local shelter near you check here and here.
