Dear Dr. Cara: Why is my period still irregular?

Our expert: Dr. Cara Natterson

I was supposed to get my third period on October 2nd, I’m 12 and very healthy. What’s happening?

Getting your period at age 12 is very healthy, just like you! It can be completely normal for girls to start getting their period as young as 8 or 9 or as old as 15 or 16. Some girls get regular periods from the very start: every 4 weeks, like clockwork, it comes. This can be surprising because you hear a lot about how it is often irregular at first. But again, this is totally normal. And makes it easier to anticipate when it will arrive much easier, too.
