I am 12 years old and I have not gotten my period yet, but my question to you is, how or when is the best time to tell my mom (and other family members) when I get it?
That’s a great question, and the answer will be a little bit different for everyone. Some girls are super comfortable talking about their bodies, and so they might bring this up casually. But other girls are more private, and some are even too embarrassed to say the words. That’s okay. You just need to find the best way to express it because you will want the help and support of at least one family member…probably your mom.
If it’s hard to gather the nerve to say something out loud, you can always write a note. But if you can muster the courage, I suggest having a conversation. Chances are, when you get your period for the very first time, you will have questions. There’s no perfect time to ask them, so just try to pull your mom aside, let her know it’s important, and lead with, “I just got my period…” That’ll get her attention!
