HelloFlo: What does a typical day during the GWC Summer Immersion Program look like?

Reshma Saujani: There is nothing typical about a day in the Summer Immersion Program! In just one day, students could collaborate on creating a video game or programming a robot to dance to a Taylor Swift song, attend a Q&A session with an inspiring woman in tech, eat a delicious *free* lunch, and take a field trip where they can meet their GWC sisters in other programs.

What are some of the highlights from the Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program?

RS: The Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program is jam-packed with highlights. Last year, Bay Area girls all convened for a town hall at Facebook with Sheryl Sandberg, New York Girls got to meet Chelsea Clinton, and Ashton Kutcher even popped into our Square program. What the girls remember more than anything though is graduation, when they get to pitch their final projects on stage. The products they build in just a few weeks are incredible, and many of them never thought they’d be capable. It’s just really inspiring.

What’s the most rewarding part of the program?

RS: From the perspective of the Girls Who Code staff, the most rewarding part of the program is watching the girls support each other. They really build a sisterhood and that’s what’s going to enable them to succeed as they continue on their paths in computer science.
