As the Republican Health Plan was introduced, Canada’s Prime Minister released updates of his own.
On International Women’s Day, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made it a point to establish his solidarity and support for woman and their inherent rights. In a statement the Prime Minister explained that the government will invest $650 million by 2020 to further support sexual and reproductive health initiatives worldwide.
“For far too many women and girls, unsafe abortions and a lack of choices in reproductive health mean that they either are at risk of death, or simply cannot contribute and cannot achieve their potential,” said Trudeau.
Trudeau’s statements are especially poignant when compared to those that the White House and the Republicans in government have introduced into the national dialogue over the last few days.
It was reported, for instance, that President Trump offered Planned Parenthood the option of keeping its funding, so long as they discontinued practicing abortions.
According to the New York Times, Dawn Laguens, the executive vice president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said:
“Let’s be clear: Federal funds already do not pay for abortions. Offering money to Planned Parenthood to abandon our patients and our values is not a deal that we will ever accept. Providing critical health care services for millions of American women is nonnegotiable.”
In his remarks on International Women’s Day, Prime Minister Trudeau further emphasized a concept that is oftentimes missing in the Republican-led US government. He said, “The right of women to choose when, how (and) with whom to start a family is one that we all must fight for and defend.”
