With beauty icons like Kim Kardashian and Beyonce, it’s no secret that curves are all the rage.
But just because a woman’s body doesn’t fit the mold of what’s trending doesn’t mean she’s any less beautiful. I’ve struggled with the concept of beauty myself because I am flat-chested. Over the years, I’ve learned to accept my body and come to realize the perks of having a smaller bust.
1. There’s No Problem With Not Wearing a Bra
I’ve been told by my friends countless times that I am lucky because I don’t have to wear a bra if I don’t feel like it—and it’s true for the most part. I could go braless to class or work and I guarantee no one would notice, but I’d probably feel a bit naked without one.
I’ve had a difficult time grasping the idea that bras are uncomfortable to wear for most women. They are so comfortable to me that I sleep with them on regularly. I’ve been told by other women they cannot wait to come home after a long day and take off their bra because it’s the ultimate form of relaxation. I think it’s probably because of my smaller chest, or maybe I’m just picking out the right type of bra.
2. No Boob-Related Back Problems
I’ve never had back pain because of my chest, which unfortunately many women have to deal with. According to Women’s Health, breasts are rarely the main contributor to back pain, but rather to a woman’s posture. With larger breasts, it’s easy to throw the entire body off balance and put extra tension on the muscles near the spine and lower back area, thus causing back pain.
3. There’s Less Sagging
Even small breasts are prone to sagging, but it’s true that less sagging occurs when there is less tissue for gravity to pull down, according to Prevention. That’s why it’s recommend that all women wear sports bras when working out, because the constant pull of gravity during movement could possibly contribute to sagging.
4. It’s Easier to Detect Breast Cancer
It can be easier for women to detect lumps in her breasts for cancer if she has smaller breasts. However, the only way to truly know if woman has breast cancer is by a getting a mammogram with her doctor, so it’s important to get checked out regularly.
5. You Can Wear Socially Acceptable Apparel
Once my friend and I were wearing almost the exact same outfit of a button-down shirt and leggings. Though we were nearly identical with our apparel, she was criticized as being “too sexual” because she has a larger bust. I think this is less of being a perk of having a smaller chest and more of an issue in our society of over-sexualizing women with large breasts. People need to realize that breasts are a regular part of the human body and not a sexual object.
Whether you wear an A cup or a D cup, it’s important to love and respect your body. As cliché as it sounds, it’s true that beauty does come in all shapes and sizes.
