As the holiday season approaches, it’s exciting to make more plans for social gatherings and prep for much needed family time. And of course, with all of these social events comes food. Heaps and massive platters of deliciously savory food – homemade, mind you – for groups of loved ones to share is the ultimate American way to celebrate love, family, and winter joy.
This is also the time of year that we decide to promote binge-eating through Thanksgiving feasts and other seasonal meals. So how in the world does one stay body-positive? It’s almost too easy to fall into mounds of blankets on the couch with sugary treats and forgo efforts to eat healthy (and in moderation) and stay active.
Here are some holiday tips on staying body-positive this winter!
1. Eat Regularly
Snack and eat as you would any other day. Listen to when you’re full and don’t push for another round even if others are choosing to do so. Everything in moderation with some indulgences is perfectly okay. Nourish your body with the foods you’re excited about because of the season. Don’t beat yourself up about them afterwards, especially if they’re a once-a-year flavor to your palate.
2. Be Active
This can get tough when the motivation to exercise disappears as soon as the sun goes down (especially when it feels like it’s setting earlier and earlier every day). Take the time to continue your normal workouts or embrace sunny afternoons to go for walks with loved ones while home on break. Focus on the exercise as a way to stay healthy rather than framing it as a way to mentally enjoy holiday foods later.
3. Be Mindful of What You Say
Even if others are spouting out negative phrases about feeling fat or saying they shouldn’t be eating something – ignore them and don’t give into participating! It’s easy to join the complain circle, but take a breath and remember that you are able to enjoy these foods without feeling crappy about your choices later. Make smart, enjoyable choices now and wipe away those negative thoughts. Someone else’s insecurities don’t have to imprint onto you.
4. Embrace the Love
Did we all decide to get together today to eat – or enjoy each other’s presence? Stay positive in all the love you’re surrounded with. Be reminded of the people you love, and the people that love you. No one is focusing on your body so neither should you! It’s important not to overthink this time of year with dampening your mood because of body-negativity. Listen to your body and its needs – honor it!
