As a modern woman, there are few relationships as intimate as the one you have with your birth control. Boys may come and go, but your trusty birth control friend will always be around watching out for you. This is why it’s critical to find the right fit for you, something that suits your lifestyle and enables you to be the strongest, toughest, and sexually healthiest woman you can be.
Birth control isn’t always a welcome subject with parents and can be something that you don’t even feel comfortable bringing up at all. Regardless, you need to feel empowered to make the right decision for you. If you feel that you can’t have an open discussion about your choices with your family, you can always turn to your family doctor or a guidance counselor.
It’s very important to know that there is no right or wrong option when choosing a birth control method. Neither your parents nor your friends can tell you why you should be taking one type of contraception over another. I took the pill for a long time before figuring out what was right for me, but finding out what did came with an incredibly satisfying piece of mind. I love my IUD for many reasons, and here are some of the most important ones.
1. It Fits My Natural Cycle
There’s nothing quite as reassuring as knowing that my body is doing it’s own thing, as nature intended. Sure, it might not always be predictable, but the thought of using hormones to manage my periods didn’t suit me. I wanted and needed an option that was safe, effective, and the least pharmaceutically invasive as possible. I personally feel at ease and comfortable in my own skin knowing that there is nothing altering my being.
2. It’s Low Maintenance
I knew straight off the bat that I would struggle taking a pill every day at the same hour. Birth control is standing between you and the potentially traumatic experience of an unexpected pregnancy.
Your doctor puts in the IUD and you don’t have to worry about a thing for several years (anywhere from three to 12, depending on the brand). Not only does it relieve stress on a daily basis, but it also empowers me to enjoy time with my partner more because I don’t have a nagging reminder in the back of my mind to take my pill in order to make it a positive experience.
3. It’s Easy to Remove
I can’t say whether or not I’ll have kids one day, but it is very reassuring to know that I could and that my fertility isn’t being affected by my birth control. The particular IUD brand I use doesn’t use any hormones to prevent pregnancy, which preserves my body’s natural ability to conceive when I’m ready.
Writing this article has started conversations with a lot of my friends about why they love their birth control and has taught me the pros and cons of a variety of different methods. Needless to say, finding the right one for you is a welcome comfort, and the IUD is not the only option, but it was the right option for me.
