Ringing in International Women’s Day included 150 women devoted to seeking an end to the ban of females in the Lord Shiva shrine in the sacred Trimbakeshwar temple.
The women represented the Bhumata Brigade in Maharashtra, India and have previously attempted to break a similar ban in January but were blocked by authorities.
Men who enter the Trimbakeshwar temple must wear specific clothing and priests in the local area have stated that the sanctum has certain rays that are harmful for women. The Bhumata Brigade’s leader, Trupti Desai, stated that the group will “try to enter the sanctum in a peaceful manner.” However, around 100 women were detained while on their march towards the temple.
