SAY WHAAAAT?
A new beauty trend has people seriously questioning how they used to pick out their shades of nude lipstick in the past. The best part? It’s not just coming from any random corner of the vlogosphere. The television show The Doctors actually aired the tip, which states that in order to find the best shade of nude lipstick for your skin tone, you should be flipping up your shirt and matching it to the color of your nipples.
What a time to be alive.
“We have a great way to pick the best shade for your face,” physician Travis Lane Stork, M.D., says in the clip. “What you want to do [is] you want to match your nipple color. Nature knows best.”
Nature knows best… You have to admit, this theory does kind of make sense, however wacky it may seem upon first glance.
But pause—before you start sharing the news with all your makeup-savvy friends (or worse, attempting to determine the exact HTML color code of your nipp by standing in front of the mirror, comparing hues), know that there is a flaw within the areola philosophy. That flaw all comes back to science and the intricacies of the human body, which is kind of where we started in the first place.
Nipples change color, a la a plethora of different factors. Pregnancy and birth control can alter the natural color of your nipples, as hormone levels dictate your nipples’ coloring. Another factor is heat: blood flow, whether or not you’re cold or hot can affect the nipples’ shade.
So before you go testing out The Doctors’ beauty rule, make sure that you’re not too hot, not too cold, not experiencing fluctuating hormone levels, not pregnant, and not on birth control. Or if you are, be prepared to have to rematch your lipstick shade once these circumstances change.
