Governor McAuliffe vetoes House Bill 2264.
The Virginia Governor’s veto of HB-2264 ultimately helped protect Planned Parenthood from being defunded in the state.
The language of the bill would have limited the amount of funding that could be sourced to organizations like Planned Parenthood from the Virginia Department of Health.
In a statement, the Governor said:
“I veto House Bill 2264, which would prohibit the Virginia Department of Health from entering into contracts or providing funds to any entity that performs non-federally qualified abortions.”
The Governor further expressed his stance on the issue by sending out a series of tweets that explained his reasoning behind the veto.
“It’s time that our General Assembly understands that we have a responsibility to protect the rights & dignity of women,” explained in a tweet. “Without access to reproductive care & the freedom to exercise choice, women are denied the choice to make deeply personal health decisions.”
Planned Parenthood clinics across the nation make it possible for women to have affordable reproductive health options, including (but not limited to) preventative care, like birth control, and family planning options, like abortions.
