Here’s Another Reason To Get A Puppy Before Your Baby Is Born

If you’ve always wanted a puppy, getting one while you’re pregnant may be the perfect time

According to researchers at the University of Alberta having a dog around while you’re pregnant could actually contribute to having a healthier baby.

“Early-life exposure to household pets has the capacity to reduce risk for overweight and allergic disease, especially following caesarean delivery,” explain the researchers.

Specifically, exposure to dogs during pregnancy and after birth help babies increase the levels of gut bacteria they produce. Ultimately, the higher levels is what helps reduce the risk of obesity and other allergic diseases.

The study looked at 746 infants and surveyed moms on their child’s exposure to pets during their second and third trimesters, as well as 3-months after giving birth.

In addition to helping babies increase their gut bacteria, dogs are also a great way to prioritize healthy living during your pregnancy.

The CDC recommends that women get 150 minutes of walking per week, which can easily break down to just a few short dog walks per day! Just in case you needed another reason to justify puppy adoption this spring.
