There comes a time in every vagina owner’s life when hair begins to sprout. For some, it’s when they’re 11, and for others (myself included), it isn’t until they are much older.
Pubic hair comes with puberty, and there is no right time that you’re supposed to have it. But if you do have it, you suddenly have a lot of options for what to do with the wiry black (or brown or blonde or red or maybe blue) hairs growing in your nether regions.
1. Keep It the Way It Is
Personally, I love having a bush from time to time. It makes me feel like a badass jungle woman and I love it. So, if you want to just let that forest fly free, by all means do. Pubic hair is evolutionarily there to protect your vagina (pre-underwear), so having a whole lot of it will never hurt.
2. Shave It
Whether you want to shave the whole thing (this is often referred to as Brazilian) or just the sides or you want to make a fun funky pattern there are a few precautions you should take.
First of all, always, always, use a sharp razor. If you have trouble remembering to buy fresh razor heads, subscribe to a monthly razor club, because it is so important to never put a rusty razor near your vagina. Second, apply shaving cream or soap or lotion before shaving. This will help you avoid those awful red bumps that pop up when your vulva gets irritated. Finally, shave down with the your hair not against it. It might take you a little longer, but you’ll avoid sharp stubble this way.
3. Wax It
Another popular way to tame pubic hair is with wax. I highly recommend going to a professional because those DIY strips can be quite hard to master, especially on and around your vulva. Waxing can be a bit expensive, especially if you’re going full Brazilian, but it is a great way to get super smooth skin for up to a month.
4. Try Laser Hair Removal
Before you do this, consult a doctor. I’m serious. Make sure it this is a safe option for your body. Laser hair removal is great if you have made the decision to permanently remove hair. If you want to occasionally have a bush, this is not the choice for you. Laser removal attacks the hair follicles directly and after multiple sessions it creates a completely smooth and hairless vulva. It’s a big commitment, but it’s also the best option if you want permanently smooth skin.
These are the four options that I recommend, but there is no right way to have or not have pubic hair. It is super important to remember that having pubic hair isn’t shameful or bad; it’s simply part of growing up. If you want to keep it, that’s awesome. If you want to get rid of it, that’s also awesome. Your pubic hair is part of your body and just like everything else on your body, you own it and you get to decide what you do with it.
And finally, it’s always good to get a second opinion so if you want to hear it from somebody else, check out this video on pubic hair by my dear friend, Laci Green.
